Evergreen

Evergreen formed from the ashes of local Louisville hardcore faves, Cinderblock, and solidified as an actual band when Louisville native and former Slint drummer Britt Walford (also of The Breeders, Palace Music, etc.) joined in on drums and recorded their only LP with soon-to-be DFA/LCD Soundsystem guy James Murphy. The end result is a killer mix of moody post rock and punk ragers, a friendly tug-of-war between two styles that seem counter-intuitive (if not impossible) to mix.
Evergreen – Glass Highway
Evergreen – Klark Kent
Evergreen – Fairlane

Wow, the MUSIC on each of these songs sounds great, and then I completely lose interest as soon as the barely mixed vocals kick in, I hope these are demos because these guys are missing a huge opportunity by sounding like a bad live venue.

HA. I love the vocals, dude sounds like (and was from what I heard) a total old hessian burnout who was still partying and throwing devil-horns everywhere he went. that mid-fi mix was exactly what they wanted, Britt was huge in developing the sound for Slint & the early Breeders records (listen to Spiderland and Pod back to back), and was pulling the strings on this band as well, that sound isn’t a fuck up or an accident. This record came out in the mid-90s on Hi-Ball (the Cocktails label), and was later reissued by Temporary Residence in the early ’00s, these aren’t demos.

Hey Mark, you gonna approve my comment or not? Just a friendly reminder… I have a blog too so know how it is. Your blog is great by the way, many compliments, just discovered it yesterday. I’m a fan. Thanks again for remembering Evergreen… if my comment doesn’t make it obvious I’m from ‘the ‘ville’ as we call it. Cheers. Hank
