Dirty Art Club

//how is this the only photo of these guys that exists on the internet?

DJ Shadow, RJD2, Madlib, The Avalanches – take your pick. The instrumental hip hop scene has a very “been there done that” mentality that makes it very hard to be surprised or impressed anymore.. and rightfully so. So many people have done it so well for so long that a certain jaded perceptive is somewhat warranted. Which is exactly why Heavy Starch, the new album by North Carolina’s Dirty Art Club charmed the fuck out of me. I hadn’t even cast a glance at this genre for years when this album blew in from left field with it’s soul samples, field recordings and throwback cuts. Granted, there is not too much new going on here and it could easily pass for an RJD2 album (sorry guys), but they are doing it pretty damn well. Did you hear how they flipped the sample on that ‘Sincerely Yours’ track? So sick. This is the type of album that transcends the background music regulation of most instrumental albums. Put this on while you are working on a project and chances are you may even do a better job as your brain gets some extra stimulation. Did you catch that? Brain-stimulating sampling. Blammo.

Totally bang on about the album getting the creative juices flowing. Another level of thinking when listening to this! Favourite track is Red Giant. Love that slow, strange, almost dark sound. NEED MORE!!
