Florida Underground Rap

//m. beezy – representing Tallahassee, FL

Mixtapes are where it’s at for underground Rap and R&B, but most of it is happening on the internet.  With retail rent skyrocketing and a lack of value placed on physical goods, more and more mixtape shops are closing their doors, unable to compete with the ease and low cost of internet distribution.  Da Plugg is a mixtape shop in Tallahassee, a rare sight with everything you would want; the latest Gucci Mane mixtapes right next to classic 90′s DJ mixes and bootlegs of movies that came out 2 days ago.  You know it’s the real deal when the insert card has the track list on the front, so that the flip side can be used for a completely different mixtape, that’s some MacGuyver shit right there.

Knowing very little about the Florida underground rap scene, I walked into Da Plugg and asked from some recommendations for local artists.  I ended up with 5 CDs showcasing various artists and genres, with a heavy emphasis on club bangers and smoothed out R&B jams.  With any underground scene, it can be pretty hit or miss, but I wanted to share some of the hot tracks since most of these artists will never be heard outside of Florida, and there is definitely some talent buried here.  We’re talking about hungry artists with a very small music scene, thirsty for the fame and success that Houston and Miami enjoy.  This is underground rap, almost strictly for the cash, no shame and no apologies.

You can hear the Houston influence on Go Hard in the Hammond organ backdrop and R&B noodling over the hook, but the hunger in the rap sounds less like modern Bun B and more like mid-90′s UGKDead People is somewhere between Lil Wayne’s clever pop culture references (I’m so sick, chicken noodle soup) and Gucci Mane’s lazy flow; the club beat would fit under either of them.  While calling money “dead people” is nothing new, there’s no denying some of the wordplay here: “ain’t a feeling in the world like when you gettin bread, my bank account look like night of the living dead.”

Byrd – Dead People
Louis V 904 – What You Doing To Me
Blow ft. Soulchild – Go Hard
M Beezy ft. Cadillac Joe – Here Kitty Kitty
Ammo – That’s Whats Up
