Lushlife

There’s a couple young rappers coming up that sound a lot like Ghostface, and it’s great to hear young rappers expanding on the energetic, slang-heavy slurred rap style.  But where Ghostface sticks closely to the 90′s hip-hop formula of rapping over classic sweet soul ballads, Philly rapper/producer Lushlife brings the same fierce rap style to electronic and abstract beats.  The new mixtape is all over the map, featuring indie rap favorite Heems from Das Racist, 80′s style synth beats, and and even a Lil B beat jack (Motivation, produced by Clams Casino).

It’s tough to pick a single song to represent the whole mixtape, since each track has a completely different feel, including many where Lushlife hardly raps, or not at all.  The only constant is the bittersweet tone blanketing each song.  These are not club bangers or simple chopped loops, it’s much closer in tone to Madlib and Flying Lotus.  Check the tracks and then grab the free mixtape from Lushlife’s Bandcamp.
