The Association

I just sort of realized that some of the kids that come to my band’s shows weren’t even born until the 90′s, which is pretty frightening for a whole variety of reasons. One of them is that a lot of the cultural references from growing up in the 70′s and 80′s that I rely on in conversation, aren’t even on their radar. Take for instance that time when television actually went off the air from midnight until 5AM, being replaced by that TV test-tone and color bars until about five minutes before five, when a static shot of the American flag would come on and the national anthem would play before all the weird cartoons started. Or that when HBO first came out it had one block-buster movie a month, and the rest of the time it was the bad repeats from the cheap section of your local video store (we called it “Hey, Beastmaster is On”).

Or what about that time when Sunday morning television was completely void of anything except that weird Christian “Davey and Goliath” claymation show or hours and hours of those religious hymn shows, the ones where rows of men and women with blank stares and matching 70′s suits and gowns sang harmonies by a bubbling brook or in a lavish garden, all in an eerie, opiated soft focus. Those were both frighteningly cultish and appealingly psychedelic, simultaneously influencing my distrust and avoidance of anything related to organized religion, and my love and fascination for The Association.
