Dang.. I know that this song is hella cheesy and on a total party tip, but can you deny that you nod right along when these girls let loose with “Fuck what you heard”? So hype.. I would put this on at 1AM when everyone is wasted and guarantee that people would bug out. Granted, I’m not actually sure what they are talking about.. Why would they be on some bullshit? Shouldn’t the guy they are talking about be ‘on some bullshit’? So confusing.. anyone?
Sure Sharon has been around for a while and has now embarked on a very impressive European tour, but how awesome is this video of her floating around Central Park? Not to mention the electrified amp in her boat with water all around her.. total tough town. Anyways, the album version of this song (below) is beautiful as well and if you can find her episode of the Take Away Show, it will blow you away.
The song has been around for a minute and was really familiar to me, but I had never seen the video before. Daang.. What’s up with bands who have feature movie budgets? This one looks so slick and well produced I thought it was a trailer for something. Really good though, watch it till the end. Love that heart tattoo as well. Remember that scene in Jesus’ Son with Billy Crudup where he follows the shady guy off the train because he has heart tattoo and it’s making his chest glow? That was a good movie.
Y La Bamba – Juniper
I’ve been hearing a ton about Will Wiesenfeld and his work as Baths lately. He seems to have generated a pretty thick. glitchy haze over all the music blogs and even snagged a spot on Pitchfork.. Which is pretty damn good for a 21-year-old from Chatsworth, CA. His debut album Cerulean came out back in July, so I’m a little slow on the draw but fuck.. you try keeping up with every electronic record that comes out. The one thing I still can’t figure out is why artists keep using that compression gimmick on so many songs – It’s like the Auto-tune of electronic music and nearly ruined the Toro Y Moi album. As far as I can tell it never sounds good and just makes everyone’s ears feel like they’re on an airplane. So anyways.. good job Baths, this album is really pretty. Just turn the compression off and we can be friends.
(Video is great too)
Baths – Animals
Baths – Lovely Bloodflow
Baths – Seaside Town
Bonus:
Baths – Pop Song
I heard Loch Lomond in Danny MacAskill’s amazing new bike video Way Back Home and was instantly taken by their Golden Brown-style waltz and Irish folk sound. Of course I then found out that they were from Oregon which slightly hampered my excitement, but no matter. Now that it’s constantly raining here in San Francisco we need a good soundtrack for puddle splashes and pitter patter on windows.
Loch Lomond – Wax and Wire
Loch Lomond – Elephants & Little Girls
We posted about these guys a while back, but this version of their song ‘Orange Yellow’ beats out the original by a landslide. Drenching everything last note in reverb and playing loose works well here.. I hope it sticks around.
San Francisco’s own Fresh & Onlys released the video for their song ‘Waterfall’ last week, and while I have been very slow in warming to this band (for reasons that I can never put my finger on), I can’t deny that this song kills it.
Fresh & Onlys – Waterfall
I had been waiting to post this song off the new Interpol album until I had listened to the whole thing and I finally did today. I guess I should have just gone ahead and posted this months ago since I ended up not really feeling it overall. This song and it’s video are pretty spectacular, but everything else on the album never came close to matching it’s intensity and sounded a bit whiny to me. It definitely had it’s moments, but I was left a little disappointed. Anyways, who cares about all that anyways when you have a single that’s so dark and unraveling. (and sorta scary – I have had a fear Asian women in rubber aprons ever since I saw Audition)
Interpol – Lights
[EDIT: YouTube finally removed the video so it looks like you'll have to go to Pitchfork to watch it..
Pretty amazing cover of Band of Horses by Cee-Lo Green. As always, he makes it beautiful and depressing with a heart-wrenching video as accompaniment. Scheduled to come out as a single in August in preparation for his full length in the Fall, I have no doubt that it may be just a matter of time before this song is everywhere. Remember ‘Crazy’?
