King Krule

Argh. I hate it when I’m wrong. Finally got my hands on the new King Krule and I’m so bummed. The best three songs on the album are songs that Archie wrote two years ago and re-did. And with the exception of ‘Has This Hit?’ which sounds great, most are re-done in a pretty overproduced and polished way. Admittedly this album isn’t bad by any stretch, it’s just not the album I expected. With the exception of ‘Easy Easy’, the new songs are pretty beat heavy and rely more on his voice than on the picky guitar parts that made his earlier songs so great. I’m aware that his Soundcloud always had hella beats so that’s no surprise and perhaps as an introduction to someone who had never heard his songs before, it will have a completely different effect. However, like all overproduced albums this one loses the fucked up, playfulness of a teenager with a great voice and comes off instead like someone told him what it should sound like. If you liked ‘Out Getting Ribs‘ before this album, do yourself a favor and skip the new version forever.
